Office Update… Already!

I spend close to 40 hours in my home office (yes, even when going into the actual office one day a week) and if any of you know me like I know me, you understand I get visually bored easily! Staring at the mostly white furniture, the beige walls and the wooden floors of my office make me feel like I’m in a nightmare. That’s when it’s time for some inspiration…which will potentially be followed by thrifting and some sidewalk shopping!!

Trends for Real Life

Next week marks a full month that I’ve been working from home 4x a week. Before November, I placed careful thought into what I wore each day…dressing based on weather, mood, how well my car was running and if I thought I’d have to hike it back to Manayunk (that’s another story)! My Philly-area office isn’t the epitome of style or fashion (belee-dat!) and while I didn’t feel the need to “dress to impress,” I did dress for success. Or I tried. Nowadays, not so much. Part of it is timing… the other part is well, laziness. Here’s why:

5:15 -5:30am - wake up, scrub up, throw on something, walk dog.

6:00am - wake Little Diva up, scrub her up, do her hair

6:30am - feed Little Diva something.. anything… hell even a granola bar. My will to compromise  is weak at 6:30.

7:00am - walk Little Diva to preschool, swing by my favorite cafe for caffeine and some human interaction that doesn’t involve doll babies, nap schedules or updating marketing components for the upcoming year.

7:30am to 4:30pm – alternate between thinking work, mindless work, dog walking and conference calls. Coupled with a noon jog (when I remember) the day flies by!

4:45pm - pick up Little Diva, prep dinner and playtime.

The rest of my evening consists of feeding the children (kid and dog), long walks around the neighborhood, playing dolls and talking about school/feelings/boogers/movies/upcoming activities. We also manage to escape the house to visit family, but the talk is generally the same. As much as I love fashion, I need to find a way to squeeze in time for it again!!

Normally, “real style” blogs feature the real style of these crazy beautiful models, stylists and musicians caught on the street. (Did I miss a memo? When did models become real people! Lol!) These days, I’ve been tossing on my favorite boots or leopard flats, jeans (yes, and I abhor jeans) and either a sweater or an old graphic tee and wrap sweater. Let me also mention I walk everywhere in my neighborhood… my looks must equal mugger-proof. While this is majorly comfy, it’s nowhere near anything to blog about in the fashion arena. After some careful thinking, I’m ready to get back to real world. I only need a few things Here are the things I need for my arrival.

Things I Want!

Interesting wedges. Because honestly, I am not walking the nearly 10 blocks from home to the little one’s school in stilettos.

Feminine touches. I like ruffles. I’m not afraid to admit it.

Colored Jeans. This is one trend that I’ve been dying to try every 5-7 years it comes back around, but never summon up the courage! This may be the year! Lol

Relaxed Silhouettes. I’m all about comfort… what can I say!

Cheapskate Home Decor

I am no interior designer… but I know what I like. I’m sure as you read this, you’re thinking the same thing. The problem with what I like has to do with funds. I don’t know about you, but I’m not making Matisse and Renoir level moneys. That’s when my former art major experience (and Ikea) comes into play!

Master Bedroom

My bedroom is a MAJOR work in progress as far as art is concerned. You may remember my previous post about the bedroom I want (see No Place Like Home Decor Stores) from Anthropologie. Yea, we’re soo not there yet. I’m a quilt, a rug and a few more pieces of art away from that look :) In the meantime, I wanted to make sure I used the amazing lighting from my bay windows and showcased the giant space that is my room. And don’t judge me because I hang my thousands of necklaces on my bedframe! Lol!

My Bedroom... A Work in Progress

Luckily, I didn’t toss my old art books from my time majoring in graphic design. I’m not ashamed to upcycle the hell out of an old college book or three. In lieu of actually being able to afford Degas, Monet and Renoir to name a few, my books are coming out of the dusty bookshelf, pictures clipped and placed on my walls. Damn right.

Living/Dining Room

Framing these beautiful images wasn’t the hard part… but figuring how to place them on the wall in a unique way was. In my living/dining room, I decided that I wanted to create a collage of images, in a way. But I cannot for the life of me, get this giant, heavy frame up on my wall by myself! So much for being the strong, independent woman… I need a handy man!

As you can see, I have a few spots to fill in! Thank God I live in a pretty fancy area and people dump some nice stuff off at the Salvation Army and Goodwill. All but 4 of the frames on my walls have come from thrift store.. and a few of the pics too! I’ll have some more flicks in a few days… but enjoy for now! I have so much space and so much decor ambition that this is bound to be fun!

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning and I’m doing the laundry, still packing and thinking. Sunday mornings are like that you know…in their serenity, in their simplicity, in their beauty Sundays get you going.

I’ve been thinking alot about the person my Little Diva will be when she’s grown. We already know she’s gonna be stylish, mais bien sur, curious and intelligent. But will she be generous? Better Late Than Never

Oh. Em. Gee. Things have been incredibly hectic lately…I apologize for my serious lack of posting. Between putting out fires at home and in the office, my pending relocation, traveling for work and trying to catch my breath in between… I didn’t know WHEN I’d be able to catch up. Anyway, here are my latest obsessions:

  1. Tea Dresses – Hello! So. My. Style. (shown is the ASOS Tea Dress in 40s Floral Print, us.asos.com)
  2. 1920′s Flapper Hair…. because lately, that’s how my mind-of-it’s-own-hair is looking.
  3. Zooey Deschanel… because c’mon, I’ve always loved this girl! Now that she’s getting a little mainstream press with The New Girl, what’s not to love?
  4. Lucky Kids magazine – an offshoot of Lucky Magazine that I feel was created exclusively for me and my little twin. Just when I thought I was in love with it, my daughter started swiping it and earmarking her favorite pages!
  5. Pink Martini – in anticipation of the 1969 album, I’ve been listening to my favorite of their albums: Sympathique,  Hang on Little Tomato and Splendor in the Grass

Hairstyle ≠ Exercise

I’ve fallen off the wagon. I went from running 2-3 times a week, swimming pretty much every day in between, to “ut uh, it’s too hot!” As a certified weave wearing, cut-off-ALL-my-hair-I-don’t-care-it’ll-grow-back type of girl, I never really worried about exercise-friendly hairstyles. It was the heat that did me in.

So when I came into the office this morning, I was surprised to see that the first article that popped up on our intranet site was “Fashionable Fitness-Friendly Hairstyles.” Hmm, worth a look. My company, UnitedHealthcare, and the Bronner Bros. International Hair Show hosted the second-annual “Hair Fitness” contest at the International Hair Show at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta this past Sunday. The winner of the competition was Atlanta stylist Jason Griggers who took home the $5,000 grand prize.

The article and the competition acknowledged that there are a disproportionate number of African-American women diagnosed with serious health conditions that could be reduced with exercise. While I’m sure there are many more reasons why some African-American women aren’t exercising, this is an excuse I’ve heard more than a few times from friends and family. The one thing the article did NOT do was show off these fashionable exercise-friendly hairstyles…. le sigh. Guess I had to be there.
