My boss is preggers… and it’s going to make me go broke.

23 Aug

Okay, not really. It’s just that everyday I come into the office, she finds yet another cute website I can find my little diva something on. Damn you! Her latest finds include:

Hairstyle ≠ Exercise

23 Aug

I’ve fallen off the wagon. I went from running 2-3 times a week, swimming pretty much every day in between, to “ut uh, it’s too hot!” As a certified weave wearing, cut-off-ALL-my-hair-I-don’t-care-it’ll-grow-back type of girl, I never really worried about exercise-friendly hairstyles. It was the heat that did me in.

So when I came into the office this morning, I was surprised to see that the first article that popped up on our intranet site was “Fashionable Fitness-Friendly Hairstyles.” Hmm, worth a look. My company, UnitedHealthcare, and the Bronner Bros. International Hair Show hosted the second-annual “Hair Fitness” contest at the International Hair Show at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta this past Sunday. The winner of the competition was Atlanta stylist Jason Griggers who took home the $5,000 grand prize.

The article and the competition acknowledged that there are a disproportionate number of African-American women diagnosed with serious health conditions that could be reduced with exercise. While I’m sure there are many more reasons why some African-American women aren’t exercising, this is an excuse I’ve heard more than a few times from friends and family. The one thing the article did NOT do was show off these fashionable exercise-friendly hairstyles…. le sigh. Guess I had to be there.

Waste Not…Want Not…

I usually don’t “reblog” things, but I think this writer has a good point. Check it out:

Summer’s Last Hurrah.

12 Aug

My name is Ashley and I’m a workaholic.

(They say the 1st step to recovery is to admit you have a problem…)

It’s not that I LOVE work so much that I can bear to step away, it’s more so the fear of getting gravely ill or facing a last-minute child’s sickness and not being able to find a babysitter. I hoard my PTO hours like a squirrel with acorns facing a harsh winter. I just know, deep down in my soul, that once I start taking time off, I’ll come down with the plague and have to muscle through it. Experience has taught me to play it safe.

But this year is different. I’m feeling healthy and optimistic. Besides, I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve accumulated close to 180 hours of PTO in my year plus of working for this company. So when my sister and step-mom mentioned that the family is trekking to Maine later this month, I put my foot down. I am OUT OF HERE.

A twelve to thirteen hour road trip with a toddler is not for the faint of heart. And, because I’ve never driven this far with the Little Diva, I’ve enlisted the help of friends, family, sorors and the blogosphere who all seem to have the drill down pat. So far I’ve heard:

Start Early.                                                                                                                                                         When my soror, Jasmina, was prepping for her move to Tennessee from Pennsylvania, this was the way to get started. Long trips are tiring on everyone, from the driver to the poor kid with no siblings trapped in the back seat. She suggests leaving around 6am. “You’ll get your best driving in between 6am to 12pm,” Jasmina says. Considering my kid is NOT a morning person, this might just work out fine.

Know Your Limits.
I’m an impatient person to begin with. Add a bored nearly 4 year old, butt-numbness and highway hypnosis… I’m in big trouble. I reached out to my sister-friend Camara, who regularly takes the trip from her hometown of Philly to her new digs in Atlanta. “Stop often, let (the little one) run around and stretch her legs. And plan for a few pit stops…considering her bladder.” So far, I’ve plotted every stop from here to Lubec. I’m ready (in my Spongebob voice!)

Pack Snacks.                                                                                                                                               According to MSNBC’s Family Travel experts, one way to ensure a melt-down free road trip is to “bring along an assortment of favorite snacks and drinks.” Between Goldfish, cherries, grapes and pb & J sammies, Little Diva will have her favorites and still stick to the “no fast food” rule I’m trying to impose… plus I’ll save a buck or twenty.

Don’t Forget the Entertainment!
We are a family of movie fanatics. Thank God for portable DVD players and the library! Between our collection of Disney films, the library’s collection of children’s books and books on tape, there will be tons of distractions from the fact that we’re driving a whole half a day. Not to mention the goodies I found on this Website: http://www.momsminivan.com/

Finally, Take It Easy.                                                                                                                                 This little tidbit came from myself. I know I’m a bit of a perfectionist… and have a game plan for myself that I rarely share with the rest of the team. But as the date of the road trip quickly approaches, this is the most important tip that I will repeat to myself.

Have any tips or want to suggest pit stops along way? Feel free to share! We’re driving through scenic New England so there will be plenty of photo ops.

Sooo unless you’ve been living under a rock (or have better things to do), you’ve undoubtedly heard that the Kardashian ladies have teamed up with Sears to peddle handbags and purses. Don’t get me wrong, I love Kim, Khloe and Kourtney just as much as any self-respecting reality TV-occasional-bystander can… but who’s PR idea was this?

The high fashion-mass market collabo was spearheaded by our dahling Isaac Mizrahi. Mizrahi took the risk of what many say “diluted” his couture line for a team up with Target. the nay-sayers were wrong; his line proved that there’s buying power behind America’s middle class. Since then, we’ve seen collaborations with everyone from Madonna to Karl Lagerfeld. The Kardashians are just following suit…but at Sears?!?!

Okay, I can see it from Sears’ point of view. There’s the opportunity to use their 20 minutes of fame to bring in a younger shopper. But I wonder what made the ladies sign on with this particular store (the store that, mind you, is “sister” of Kmart)? Any thoughts?

Fighting Temptation for Fall Fashion…part une

10 Aug

I love Fall; the crisp air…the foliage…the boots…the Children’s Place lookbook. Wait, hold up.

In just 3 and a half short years, I’ve gone from juggling press deadlines to juggling Barbie’s. And while the stilettos may have changed (not by much lol), the love of fall fashion has stayed the same. This is especially true when it comes to the Little Diva.

Children’s Place unleashed it’s lookbook on me via e-mail today, along with a 20% off coupon. SMH! (Why, why must you test me!!) Just look at these looks they’ve thrown together! I’ve highlighted the ones I KNOW my daughter would love… le sigh.

How dare you make something so cute!

Cheapskate’s Dinner Party

1 Aug

Warning: This post has a sprinklin’ of random on top. At any rate, enjoy!

In an effort to not only save money, but to stop relying on the ubiquitous “man,” I’m doing a lot of research on sites like Freegan and stalking my budget like a money-saving predator.

To celebrate my newly renewed sense of frugality, when and if I move, I will be inviting you all, and by all I mean a select few of you, to my place for a Moonshine and Pruno dinner party. We’ll dine on one big ole pot of spaghetti, munch day old bread (bought under-the-table from the bakery on the cheap), drink homemade alcohol and be merry. Wanna check out the drinks, maybe even learn how to make them yourself? Click the links below. I can’t guarantee the safety of any of this, but have a ball.
