I Hate Business Casual

17 Feb

It’s such a vague term and depending on where you work, leaves a lot of room for guess-work. My company (though for-profit, corporate America insurance) tends to be a bit laid back, at least in the location where I’m situated. I’ve seen it all kids… I’ve seen it all. So what does one do when business casual becomes oh-too-casual? Step it up to stay ahead of the crowd!

So with more business than casual being in full effect this week, I threw together an outfit or two and searched the web for help!

Oooo and I also found the following posts:

It’s My Birfday!! (Monday!)

15 Feb

It’s a celebration (in my Dave Chappelle/Rick James voice)!

This upcoming Monday I will celebrate my 26th year of life. Sigh. I’m on the other side of 25 – according to my sources,  it either gets better or all goes down hill from here. I have no clue what I’m doing to celebrate, but I do know (some of) what I want!

  1. Kate Spade Bow tie jacket
  2. B. Markowsky Ollie Leather hobo
  3. Lanvin Na Beige platforms
  4. White House Black Market Red Crepe Skirt
  5. T by Alexander Wang
  6. Forever 21 Concave Sparkle ring
  7. Forever 21 vintage rose necklace
  8. OPI black shatter nail polish

Happy Valentine’s Day!

14 Feb

Love is in the air, along with flowers, candy and, inevitably, tacky lingerie (yea, I said it). Whether you’re buying it, or it’s bought for you, lingerie is a great way to judge taste.

Instead of giving you not-so-good examples, I’ll help you out (especially if you’re procrastinating and about to run out to a store). Whether you’re a Victoria’s Secret gal, La Petite Coquette or La Perla lady, a few tips will last a lifetime:

  1. FIT -  I cannot stress how important it is to wear fitting undergarments. Ladies, get measured. As our weight fluctuates and age increases, so do our cup size. Besides, how uncomfortable could you be with bits and pieces falling out up top AND below? Yuk.
  2. Match -   I’m not a matchy-matchy person, but we should all have at least one sexy little coordinating set. Come one, just one!
  3. Color/Design – Think about it, that lacy bright pink bra with camo print is NOT going to be cute forever (if it ever was), nor will it look good under your button-down in the morning. I like to get the most bang for my buck, but it’s your money! (editor’s note: I tend to stick with black, ivory or gray, but hey, to each her own).
  4. Treat Delicately – Do not, I repeat, do NOT toss your delicates in with your jeans and junk! Avoid the dryer for your bras and you’ll get a million more wears out of them. Trust me here.
  5. Purge – Lastly, if it’s looking a little worn, toss it. That’s all. Forget the memories and how “pretty” it was. Replace it and move on.

Flying High

10 Feb

Half of my sisters (note: I have 4) have decided to escape the states and fly the international scene. Pam ventured to France last April with World World Opportunities in Organic Farming and just never came back (no worries, she just landed in Thailand – we know she’s okay!), while Rebecca is headed off to India next month. With these two in mind, I bring you:

1. L’Occitane Crème Mains Shea Butter Hand Cream
2. Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue
3. Kiehl’s Ultra Face moisturizer
4. DKNY Cozy (about 12 different ways to wear this!!)
5. Echo “touch” gloves – allow you to use your iPhone, etc!!

I Just Discovered… Boutiques.com

5 Feb

I know, I’m a few months behind on running my mouth about this site… but you don’t understand! This is GREAT!

If you haven’t heard of it, let me brief you. The media-game-changer that is Google launched this site in November, allowing fashion-addicts like you and I to define our style and search for items we’d love. No search box required.

Here’s how it works: Instead of searching the sea that is the Internet for the latest in Marc Jacobs (some of which totally clash with my style, I go to the site, chose images that reflect items I’m interested in. Afterwards, I input the colors, styles and patterns I love and hate. The site uses my choices to widdle down my style and filter items I would love and creat my own “boutique”… all based on visual search tools and algorithms (I know, so exciting right!)

It’s intuitive. It smooshes together the vibe Polyvore is looking for, the styles/brands I’m looking for, and the social networking aspect via “followers.” I am impressed. See for yourself by clicking here

Feelin It Friday!

4 Feb

As some of you know, I don’t “participate” in television. Don’t get me wrong, I have a television! I used to even have cable! I made the switch when I realized:

  1. I only allow my child to watch PBS
  2. I only watched it when I couldn’t sleep, which often meant that I really couldn’t sleep after watching my favorite shows (Criminal Minds anyone?)
  3. I was paying a massive bill (shoutout to Comcast) and not watching it enough to justify it.

Alas, I had to find other ways to entertain myself. I started on the NY Time 1000 Best Movies Ever Made and find my favorite feel good movie, Amelie. Which lead to more movies to love, music to check out, and more… inspiration!

Don’t Heckle The Comedian (or give reason to put YOU out)

4 Feb

I’ve been invited to see Kevin Hart tonight and, although I knew for some time now, I still cannot decide what to wear! Smh. The doors open at 8!

Here’s what I was thinking (looks courtesy ShopStyle - sorry, running out of time and couldn’t do my own lookboards!)…

Any thoughts?  (By the way, the comedian is Kevin Hart… I’m so not trying to get played.

And so it begins: Verizon launches iPhone (pre-orders at least)

3 Feb

As a marketer, I’ve become very curious as to why people buy the things that they do. What makes someone jump at an offer or more importantly, make a change? In college, I took this curiosity to class and tried to pick up as much information on consumer behavior as possible. (I was a dual marketing and journalism/PR major… can you blame me?) But despite my college learnings, I find myself to be a sucker for cell phones and other gadgets, and a sucker for the cell phone carrier’s ploys to take my money.

As Verizon launches its iPhone 4, many of my Apple friends have thought of leaving AT&T to test out the competition. The phones are the same, the price on a contract is said to be similar…. but the value prop Verizon is calling out is that their phone runs on a faster, more reliable network.

I have to say, as an AT&T customer with my “can’t go anywhere without it” iPhone, I’m curious to see how this is going to pan out. This is one of Verizon’s biggest marketing pushes of the moment; I wonder how this may affect their Android sales, which haven’t faced much competition with the carrier’s other phone lineups until now. Remember how many people made the jump from BlackBerry to the Droid?

Guess only time will tell…

Music’s Got A Hold On Me

3 Feb

To all my readers, thanks for being patient! I’ve been tackling work like a pro footballer and hustlin-hustlin everyday. Whether working from home or trapped in my cubical, I’ve been rocking out to some pretty amazing (and yes, sometimes old) music. Mixing Rihanna, Amy Winehouse and Etta James puts you in a pretty weird head space, but leads me to some pretty interesting fashion choices!

The Clothes
Polka Dot top, Bebe
Vandeila t-strap peep toe pump, Aldo
Perfume, Bond no. 9 Nuits de Noho
High-waist pencil skirt, Express

The Music
Valerie (Single) Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson
Etta James: Her Best, Etta James
Rated R, Rihanna
