Just A Dash of Color…

21 Jan

I have always loved wearing bright colors. I remember when I was a youngen (before the Catholic uniform days stifled my creative clothing outlet) I had this AMAZING hot pink and flourescent orange LA Gear outfit: biker shorts and a half shirt just slouched off the one shoulder. With a side ponytail. And the matching light-up sneakers. You couldn’t tell me a thing! I was fly.

These days, I can’t exactly get away with the biker shorts and I don’t think my office would appreciate my half shirt. But I’ve found other ways to sneak wildy bright colors and trends into my wardrobe. Today’s focus: nails!

I know this sounds bad, but the best part about this trend is that my daughter can get in on it. She tends to steal my nail polish anyway, and I’d rather see my 3 year old in a bright blue or neon yellow than a sexy red. Yes, I’m raising a diva.

Counter-clockwise from left:
Caribbean Cocktail, Sephora. $5 – Limited edition, love that it stays and is relatively cheap.
Orange, Forever 21. $2.80 – LOVE this color but it chips too easily. Worth it for a one nighter.
Totally 80′s, Milani. $4.99 – I swear by Milani. If I can’t find the color anywear else, I know I’ll find it with this brand.
Pulsion, Chanel. $25 – I’m a sucker for a Chanel nail polish. It’s always so rich and thanks to the no-spill bottle, you never lose a drop.
Big Bang, KIT. $15.95 – Quick drying and POPPIN colors. What more can you ask for?
Aquarius, Urban Decay – Part of the Summer of Love Collection. If you’re a makeup junkie, you already know what Urban Decay is hitting for. Get it. Fast.

The Long… And The Short Of It

19 Jan

Like any 20-something, I like to see and be seen. When I’m off mommy-duty and get to paint the town royal blue, I get dolled up, spray on some smell goods and throw on a loud nail polish. Something different from my normal “button down/sweater/trouser jeans” work combo, ya know?

Well going out in 20 degree weather is no joke, especially when I lot of the “out on the town” dresses are sleeveless, strapless, mini or ooo-child-where’d-your-hemline-go! My sista-friend Julia got me on the hunt for the perfect long sleeve mini dress this weekend. It’s not a new trend, but it’s something my shivering 5’7 frame would appreciate! This is what I found:

Low – Medium – High Options

  1. Black Mesh Long Sleeve Mini Dress, Amiclubwear. $24.99
  2. V-Neck Ribbed Sweater Dress, Arden B. $69
  3.  Long Sleeve Striped Mini Dress, Diane Von Furstenberg (Courtesy of Bloomies). $198.

My darling readers… thanks for bearing with me! This past week has been a blur. I’ve been everywhere in the past 7 days and it looks like the fun is just getting started (the “perks” of a marketing communications-that-influences-sales gig). I’ll leave you with a montage of my clothing choices as I boarded planes, sat through meetings with big wigs, kicked it with my toddler and partied with my Zeta Phi Beta Sigma phamily. Enjoy!

Urban Fashion Defined

7 Jan

My boss is pretty cool* When I told her I wanted to get back to blogging, she helped me come up with this site’s name. She shops at Anthropologie, reads fashion blogs like this one, and wears peep-toe booties to work. C’mon, when’s the last time YOUR boss wore peep-toe booties?

But alas, coolness can only take you so far. When I explained to her the name of my blog, she questioned what exactly “Urban Fashion” was anyway. Like many of us bloggers, we can’t explain it in the best of terms, but know it when we see it. It’s the inexplicable way high fashion is mixed in with your H&M gear. It’s how urbanites can fashion together a look from some old slacks, a DIY shirt and an attitude. It’s awesomely hard-to-describe, yet simplistic and eye-catching at the same time.

Check out this great article/pictorial from one of my favorite blogs, FashionBombDaily about the definition of Urban Fashion. And while you’re around, have your say in the poll below!

*not “cool” like we toke up together or I can do what I want, but “cool” as in she knows what’s up.  (Just kidding about that tokin it up thing… I’m a lady :) )

Say It Ain’t So!?

Let’s talk about… the return of the kitten heel.

UGGHHHHH!!!

These horrendous things are like the red-headed stepchild (sorry to my cousin Laura, you know I love red-heads) of the shoe family. They do nothing for your calf, nothing for your legs and not-a-damn-thing for our sex appeal. Frankly, with my high arch, they do nothing to add comfort either. But out of respect for la familia, I’m going to highlight a few “not so bad” kitten heels. Take your pick ladies…. if you must.

1. Petra peep-toe slingback pump, Sam Edelman $99
2. Nuncio pump, Nine West $69
3. Suedette Basketweave Cone Heels, Forever 21, $29 (because really, who can resist F21?!)
4. Vicki sling back pump, Faryl Robin (more than likely found at Bus Stop Boutique!)

A Funny Thing Happened While Wearing My Weave

6 Jan

Corporate America be damned, when I need a makeover, I do it big. Take my hair for example. I’m in the middle of deciding whether or not to grow out my Nia Long-esque pixie and just to test whether I can do long hair again, I got extensions. Looong extensions.

Before:    After:

Much talk is made of African-Americans who wear natural hair in the workplace, but how does one address the glances, the side-eyes and the awkward “so how does it stay in/how do you wash it” questions about extensions in the workplace? Maybe it’s because I went to such extremes with the length (then again any length is extreme with a pixie cut!) but I actually felt a bit uncomfortable at work these past few days. Weird huh?

Smelly Inspiration

5 Jan

It’s no secret that ittle things set a spark in my mind, fragrances are no secret. In a last minute dash to Victoria’s Secret this weekend, I found a smell the reminded me of love, hope, and Spring. And inspired the following…

The smell: Kissing in Paris, Victoria’s Secret
Bebe top, Bebe.com
Line-Hung Loungers, Anthropologie.com
Heelsup Platform pump, Nine West.com
Banded Waist Cargo Pants, ArdenB.com
Faux Gold Trimmed Circular Stone and Chain Dangle Earring, Charlotte Russe
Light Brown Fireball Ring, Charlotte Russe

This scent is so refreshing you may see some more inspiration tomorrow LOL

Toodles for now :)

Add a Little Sparkle and Stir

5 Jan

As I said on Twitter the other day, this inspiration was given to me by a handful of loose sequins,
Lupe Fiasco’s verse in Kanye’s “Touch the Sky” and an article my friend Julia sent me… she always helps me
realize my dreams aren’t bound by the cubical. Enjoy!

The song: Touch the Sky, Kanye West

Jessicas Attic Stripe Sequin T-Shirt, republic.co.uk
Zelda Emebllished Jean Leggings, Express
Hessling platform sandal (ooo velvet + sequins lol), Aldo
Earrings and Sequined Anchor Bag, Forever 21

Step out of the cold… let’s start the show!

Thanks for stopping by, I’m glad you came! Please grab a sit, feel free to peruse the photos and my ramblings about being a young professional in a major city – fighting with a toddler, avoiding pollution hair damage, hustlin at a 9 to 5 – and remaining fashionable all the while.

About me: I’m a Pisces to my core. I get sentimental and the smallest thing can remind me of an adventure I once had. I love to listen to people and truly enjoy a good story, but I have a short attention span :(

I believe: Change is necessary for growth, even though it’s painful at times.

My likes: Pretending to know what I’m talking about. Eyeballing men’s booties. Using my coy nature to get what I want! Tickling my daughter. Feeling like I achieved something each day before I rest my head.
